Case Study: Building Climate-Resilient Agro-Ecosystems for Smallholder Farmers in India

At IBISA, we believe resilience is built through collaboration, innovation, and solutions designed around farmers’ real needs. Our latest case study, developed in partnership with the DHAN Foundation and the InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF), highlights how integrated climate protection can strengthen the future of smallholder farming communities across India.

India remains one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, with millions of farmers exposed to increasing weather uncertainty, crop losses, and livelihood instability. To address these challenges, the initiative combines multiple layers of protection and support, including index-based crop insurance, indemnity-based livestock insurance, agri-advisory services, and climate-smart agriculture practices.

The program is designed not only to transfer risk, but also to help farmers adapt and make more informed decisions in the face of climate change. By integrating technology, local partnerships, and community engagement, the initiative creates a more sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem.

The impact is already significant:
>> More than 555,000 farmers across six Indian states are benefiting from climate risk transfer solutions.
>> 100 agri-advisory centers have been established to provide guidance, climate information, and agricultural support to at least 200,000 farmers.
Farmers now have improved access to climate data, advisory services, and resilience-building practices that support long-term adaptation.

This initiative demonstrates the importance of combining financial protection with practical, on-the-ground support systems. Through trusted local networks and innovative climate insurance solutions, IBISA and its partners are helping farming communities better manage uncertainty and protect their livelihoods.

Together, we are building stronger, more climate-resilient futures for farmers across India.
